Maple Apple Chips
A week ago I made these apple chips. A week ago was also the first time I took any of my children to the emergency room to be seen. It wasn’t life threatening by any means but any injury can cause a panic. Though the only one truly panicking was my oldest.
It all started with her wanting to practice cutting apples as she saw me doing. She silently refused to wait for help and took it upon herself to try when my back was ever so briefly turned. Tools are sharp and she learned that the hard way.
What should have been an hour visit (max) at the hospital took 4 hours. FOUR! When we arrived we were next in line, but then one ambulance after another arrived and we were pushed back in line waiting. Do you have any idea how it is to sit in an emergency room with three children? One who is scared and bleeding, another who is bouncing off of the walls and won’t sit still and the last who is desperately trying to fight a nap but knows he should just give in. It was fabulous. Thankfully the Mr left work early and surprised us. A much needed and appreciated helping hand.
Well into our extended visit, her finger was glued up and we were nearly on our way.
So arriving home, finally, these beauties were still sitting on the counter waiting to go in the oven. After sitting out for so long they had some extra time to dry out on their own but fear not, that wouldn’t be the only time I made these. I needed and wanted more so I made a second batch the next day.
I wish I’d made a batch of cinnamon apple chips along with these because I’m not sure which I like more. I’m a huge apple cinnamon fan but the sweetness from the maple syrup was just outstanding. It complimented the apples perfectly. And since I had some smaller apples to work with this year, I was able to use a mandoline slicer (see also injury – be careful people) unlike last year where my apples were too big and had to use a knife. This meant thinner slices and a crisper finish with the maple chips. Absolutely heavenly.
If you’ve never made apple chips and have a serious love for apples, I highly recommend making some. They’re a true treat to have and a great healthy snack!
Maple Apple Chips
Ingredients
- apples
- pure maple syrup
Instructions
- Wash apples well. Carefully slice apples as thin as possible using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife, discard seeds. Place slices on a parchment lined baking sheet. Generously brush with maple syrup.
- Place in a 200F° oven for 3-4 hours or until apple chips are crisp.
- If making multiple trays at once, be sure to rotate trays between racks after each hour. I made 2 trays on day one and 3 trays on day two.
- Store in an airtight container for up to several weeks or more.

My favorite apple recipe is baked apples, the way my Grammy used to make them. She would core the apples almost to the bottom making a sizable hole and then stuff in raisins, nuts, brown sugar and cinnamon and slow roast them to perfection. Yum!!
I make a Mile High Apple Pie that’s a fall family favorite – it’s at least 7″ tall when it goes into the oven. Fun & delicious!
