Maple Apple Chips

A week ago I made these apple chips. A week ago was also the first time I took any of my children to the emergency room to be seen. It wasn’t life threatening by any means but any injury can cause a panic. Though the only one truly panicking was my oldest.
It all started with her wanting to practice cutting apples as she saw me doing. She silently refused to wait for help and took it upon herself to try when my back was ever so briefly turned. Tools are sharp and she learned that the hard way.
What should have been an hour visit (max) at the hospital took 4 hours. FOUR! When we arrived we were next in line, but then one ambulance after another arrived and we were pushed back in line waiting. Do you have any idea how it is to sit in an emergency room with three children? One who is scared and bleeding, another who is bouncing off of the walls and won’t sit still and the last who is desperately trying to fight a nap but knows he should just give in. It was fabulous. Thankfully the Mr left work early and surprised us. A much needed and appreciated helping hand.

Well into our extended visit, her finger was glued up and we were nearly on our way.
So arriving home, finally, these beauties were still sitting on the counter waiting to go in the oven. After sitting out for so long they had some extra time to dry out on their own but fear not, that wouldn’t be the only time I made these. I needed and wanted more so I made a second batch the next day.
I wish I’d made a batch of cinnamon apple chips along with these because I’m not sure which I like more. I’m a huge apple cinnamon fan but the sweetness from the maple syrup was just outstanding. It complimented the apples perfectly. And since I had some smaller apples to work with this year, I was able to use a mandoline slicer (see also injury – be careful people) unlike last year where my apples were too big and had to use a knife. This meant thinner slices and a crisper finish with the maple chips. Absolutely heavenly.

If you’ve never made apple chips and have a serious love for apples, I highly recommend making some. They’re a true treat to have and a great healthy snack!

Maple Apple Chips
Ingredients
- apples
- pure maple syrup
Instructions
- Wash apples well. Carefully slice apples as thin as possible using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife, discard seeds. Place slices on a parchment lined baking sheet. Generously brush with maple syrup.
- Place in a 200F° oven for 3-4 hours or until apple chips are crisp.
- If making multiple trays at once, be sure to rotate trays between racks after each hour. I made 2 trays on day one and 3 trays on day two.
- Store in an airtight container for up to several weeks or more.

I just love apples in general, especially the crispness of a fresh one. Last season I made an apple galette several times — so much easier than pie!

I like to use apples in my butternut squash soup!
My favorite apple dessert is just about ready to get made. Called Pikes Peak Spiked Apple Crisp; can you believe a recipe from an old cookbook that ALREADY had booze in it?
I would love to win this machine but at the same time I don’t wish bad karma for myself as my old girl is staring at me from the counter and I don’t want to upset her. KitchenAid from back in the day when white was all there was with a blue band. As in TWENTY SEVEN years ago. I will cry the day that machine goes; it carries with it a history of every birthday and big event ever held in my home; I don’t want to upset it now! :)
My absolute favorite apple recipe is either sliced apples paired with dubliner cheese or apples lightly steamed and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar! Delicious!
My favorite apple dish is Farmhouse Apple Bread. I follow you on Facebook. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
My absolute favorite apple recipe has to be the traditional apple crisp – so easy but so delicious!
Fried apples have always been our family favorite. We cook the apples in butter until they are almost tender, then add honey and cinnamon to taste along with a little water to prevent sticking.
Now, I’ve gone and made myself hungry.
Im simple, I love to make homemade apple pie. There’s nothing better to make your house smell divine.
My favorite apple recipe is just about any apple pie – as long as it is topped with ice cream!
