Slow Cooker Tomato Tortellini Soup
Creamy homemade slow cooker tomato and cheese tortellini soup. This easy and flavorful meal is perfect for any night of the week!
I’ve mentioned before how I don’t normally go to the theater to see movies, because it’s so expensive! Even if you go to a matinee, when the price is reduced, it’s still expensive. Tickets, snacks, drinks… it all adds up SO fast. However, I’m seriously tempted to go see Rogue One while it’s still in theaters, because we finally caught up on all of the others this weekend! We’re hooked. I never thought we’d all be Star Wars fans, but I think it’s safe to say that we might be. I kind of always have been but just slacked off on the new ones. I wanted to stick to the originals, the classics, but the new ones are SO good. So, if you haven’t seen them, I definitely recommend checking them out!
We’ve had a strange bird change in our yard this year. Normally we have a ton of little birds that hang out all winter long. I’ve seen fewer small birds and way more larger birds like cardinals, woodpeckers and groups of bluejays. We’re talking 4 or 5 bluejays at a time at the feeder, which is very unusual for us. They’re fun to see, but I do miss the smaller birds. The larger birds tend to scare all of the others away and hog the food. Tsk tsk!
Growing up, snow days meant soup and grilled cheese… and of course, hot chocolate! Classic winter comfort food. I always had chicken noodle… classic kid soup, that I still totally love. But, my mom always had tomato soup.
And, since it snowed this weekend, it’s a perfect time to share a tomato soup recipe!
This tomato soup is so creamy and ridiculously easy, but also packed full of flavor. To make it more filling, I added cheese tortellini… because who can resist pasta or cheese?!
This comforting slow cooker tomato tortellini soup is an absolute must make. A classic soup, perfect to warm up with on a cold winter day!
This is guaranteed to become a new favorite! Be sure to add it to your dinner plans!
Slow Cooker Tomato Tortellini Soup

- 1 C yellow onion chopped
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 28 oz diced tomatoes
- 15 oz tomato sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp dried basil
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes optional
- 4 C chicken broth
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/2 C heavy cream
- 20 oz refrigerated cheese tortellini
- Parmesan cheese for topping
- Basil for garnish optional
Instructions
- To the bowl of a 5-6 quart slow cooker add onion, garlic, tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, seasonings and bay leaves. Cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 8 hours.
- When initial cook time is up, remove and discard bay leaves. Use an immersion blender to puree soup. Alternatively, soup may be carefully pureed in a blender in batches. Stir heavy cream into pureed soup. Add refrigerated cheese tortellini to soup, stir gently and return cover. Continue cooking for an additional 20-30 minutes.
- Divide between bowls. Serve with freshly grated parmesan cheese.

Thanks, Marye!
It is so cold here today and I’m thinking this slow cooker tortellini would be perfectly warm and comforting!
It absolutely would! I hope you’re able to stay warm! :)
This sounds so yummy! I’m always on the lookout for a new soup recipe!

Thanks Rachael!
Right now I have neither an immersion or regular blender. Might I use my small Kitchen Aid portable mixer which has a whisk type attachment?
You could certainly give that a try, though I don’t think you’ll get a smooth texture using a hand mixer. It’s always worth a try though! If it’s an option, I’d recommend considering looking into even an inexpensive immersion blender for best results. Good luck!!
Ugh I hate how expensive it is to go to the theatre! And with all the great movies out this year it’s like impossible to see them all…but I’m dying to catch La La Land! :D I’m still on the fence about going, or just waiting a little bit and enjoying it at the comfort of home with a bowl of this tortellini soup ;)
That’s how I always feel – wait and watch at home (aka cheaper and more comfortable) or go now, because I don’t want to wait six months!
I can’t wait to try this soup.. Looks so yummy.. I think garlic toast would be good with it..
That would be a great addition. And thank you! :)
This looks and sounds just perfect on a cold winter’s night!
Thanks, Cynthia!
this would be perfect to come home to after a long day.
And I never go to the movies… so expensive! dang
